A fire was brewing in Kyoto Animation studio… except this time it's for real.
An angry train otaku from 2chan poured gasoline unto the Kyoto Animation studio, burning the place to the ground, injuring many and killing 33 people!

Here's the culprits reason for it:

>I'll try to summarize: Train-obsessed photographer on 2ch's train board makes up the word "barisaku" for a specific way to get the lighting just right when photographing trains, and keeps spamming that phrase on 2ch so much he ends up getting nicknamed Barisaku-kun

>Then KyoAni makes an anime about people who play in an orchestra ("Sound! Eufonium") where they use the word "barisaku" as a short for "bariton sakusofon" (bariton saxophone), and he thinks they stole his word that he was so proud of.
>What really broke the camel's back was when KyoAni collaborated with the Kyoto public transportation authorities to decorate a train with anime characters from Sound! Eufonium.
>From then on he went to 2ch's/5ch's anime board every single day to shitpost about how KyoAni ruined his life.
>But the threads suddenly stopped yesterday.
>The arsonist was overheard by witnesses as shouting "They ripped me off!" over and over again.

Don't really know what the soranews stuff you linked has to do with it, and well just to clarify, the supposed phrase was バリバリ観光してサクッと撮りましょう (energetically sightsee and take pictures quickly), abbreviated to バリサク (barisaku) which also became his nickname, and here's a thread where he supposedly goes cray cray:

Would be the thing to take out from it, where he goes "Eupho's barisax scene ruined me" pretty much.

That said, it's just 5ch speculation at this point, and this morning newspaper explicitly mentions novels being stolen, so at this point there's nothing certain of what was the real motive unless we have some official statement from the police I guess.

When I first saw that this was arson, I said to myself, "Probably an angry otaku."
I expected an anime otaku, though.

Ah, actually upon further research the whole "barisaku" thing meaning taking photos with certain lightning is also possible as it's supposed to come from the phrase 「バリバリ順行でサックとバリサク」

Also dumping more info as everywhere is just a mess. Director status:

Supposedly alive by twit of someone saying they heard both he and Ishihara were alive, but radio silence since then, so death is a possibility
Missing, most likely dead

As for ongoing projects:
>In response to the studio KyoAni fire, Japanese movie distributor Shochiku Inc. has issued a statement about the upcoming Violet Evergarden movie and OVA episode, as well as the Free! 2020 movie. According to a Yahoo Japan report, the release dates for all three projects produced by Kyoto Animation Studio are “not expected to be affected at this time”.

>The official Twitter account for the Free! Iwatobi Swim Club anime series has announced that they have canceled the Free! 2020 movie teaser due to the KyoAni fire attack. The screening of Free! Movie 3: Road to the World was originally scheduled to take place on Friday, July 19, 2019.

New project most likely burned down

Thinking about it again, the director stuff is mostly coming from Twitter so I would deem it as dubious info for now.

This type of thread should really be left for someone who can speak Japanese to post, in my opinion

You don't need to apologize, I just think it's better for people who speak the language to make threads about news stories so there's not misinformation instead of a bunch of "supposedly" and unsupported claims

The barisaku thing is 2ch speculation. "supposedly" the suspect said he did it because they stole his LN plot (which makes a lot more sense, comparatively)

Well, the thing is that nobody really knows, as even the TV news reported about the barisaku thing at some point, yet Kyoto shinbun and yahoo news (which pulls info from the aforementioned newspaper) say it's about novels. So far the only one who truly knows about the motivation for this is the arsonist himself and he's also in the hospital.
As for people alive it's mostly just people reporting for people they know being alive or not as in , so no wonder these are dubious claims. We're probably looking at a 2 week-full month period at the very least until we have some solid lists of who made it.

Rumors and motivations aside the important thing that we know for sure is that many talented lives were lost in a very tragic and unexpected way so it makes one wonder what's gonna happen from now on in many aspects.

I haven't seen Violet Evergarden yet.
Would it be respectful to do so in light of this? Is it good?

Also between that I am a spammer, please tell me to leave, kudasai!anner writing clichés on his gun and livestreaming himself shooting up a Mosque while blasting Eurobeat and probably the deadliest mass murder in post-WWII Japan being someone burning down a fucking anime studio, I genuinely feel like there's a glitch in the matrix and reality is off the fucking rails.

Are you stupid?

violet evergarden was the most boring thing ever

what a travesty

Kind of surreal to see clips of Haruhi nd K-On on the TV news about a terrorist attack in Japan.

Aren't most anime nowadays novel adaptations with proper credits given to the author?

The witness who hosed down the perpetrator described him as being of fat build with a tattoo on his belly.

>Would it be respectful to do so in light of this?
I'm sure they wouldn't mind somebody appreciating their work after they're gone.

Did 5ch's train-otaku theory turn out to be true or was it the supposed LN plagiarism?

The novel story is reported by pretty much all the relevant media as of right now.

Appreciating their work is not disrespectful.

The novel is more sensible but the retarded train thing is a lot more
I don't really want to say funnier but it's a lot more fucking retarded and surreal so until proven otherwise I think I'll go and believe that one instead.

the more i hear of this the sadder i get
just… why???

If the autismo wanted to take revenge clearly they've succeeded
Really this is such a senseless fucking tragedy, even if it was plagiarised like literally who the fuck cares
It makes sense if you like, stab this old dude, even if it's still demented, but obliterating the art and lives of 30+ people just because is really fucked up.

Gathering from the latest news, the guy seemed to display antisocial behaviour, he has already been convicted of robbery in the past. Seems like the whole plagiarism thing might just be some kind of schizophrenic delusion. He has already been named and identified.

I can understand physical item being lost, but did they not keep any backups? How is that even possible when their data is almost their entire business?

Japanese companies operate like its 1993

Lack of things like insurance and offsite backups is a major problem in Japan. The port of Kobe was the busiest container port in the world in the 70s but it's a ghost of its former self now after the 1995 earthquake because almost nothing was insured.

Japan is one of those countries where they cut costs by just not insuring or making failsafes, so when things go to shit they REALLY go to shit.
