What are you reading?
Here's a recently started web manga: https://mangadex.org/title/42620

 No.33247

She looks more like a courtesan than a maid.
How improper.

 No.33248

It's suspicious is it not?

 No.33254

I’ve been reading urusei yatsuta and i’m not enjoying it to be honest. It’s so mean-spirited and I sometimes wonder why it’s considered a “golden age” series.

 No.33255

Also, I read the infamous H-Manga Tachibana’s Circumstances With a Man and I also didn’t enjoy it, I didn't like the art that much to be honest. The NTR also wasn’t that good, and it was kind of boring with him never finding out.
The happy ending was also kind of odd as well, it’s fucking NTR.

 No.33261

But why would you read NTR instead of a good manga with good art like https://mangadex.org/title/21562/kusuriya-no-hitorigoto

 No.33262

>>33261
What do you make of the latest chapter?

 No.33263

>>33262
Judging from her reaction to Jinshi's 'how do you devalue a courtesean' and the age of Rakan, that's probably the one Rakan wanted to buy up and had to "devalue", since Rakan said he wanted to do that during his youth iirc and he's clearly like 40-50 now.

It might also be Maomao's birth mother considering her dream and how she seemed to be personally upset with the question ('I managed to keep my emotions in check'), or at least her foster. Unless I'm missing something we still don't know where Maomao came from and why she was being raised in basically a brothel, but her being the child of an old prostitute makes sense to me.

 No.33266

>>33263
Yeah, that's pretty much what many people seem to be saying. If that's the case wouldn't that make Rakan her father?

 No.33267

>>33266
That would at least explain why Rakan seemed to be interested in making her solve a puzzle he clearly already had an inkling of the answer to.
With that being said, I'm not sure - Rakan clearly doesn't have syphilis, and I can't imagine that Rakan would get her pregnant and then just not buy her after devaluing her into his price range. The courtesans in this manga seem to be up for sale as wives and it seems to be a fairly normal endgame for them, so one should assume Rakan would've done just that.

 No.33273

Normally references can feel obnoxious but I do agree that the references here aren't too bad, although there are a ridiculous amount of them in this manga that range from the obvious to the niche and even things outside manga/anime like real life Japanese celebrities and films/music. There are probably many that I have no clue about either but in general they are "tastefully done" for a lack of better word.

They're largely unobtrusive when they involve actual characters it makes sense in context and the manga doesn't seem to try to draw attention to it, so it's like, passive references. You needed something there anyway, so you may as well make it something recognizable.

I did try reading the girl who ate death, but it just couldn't keep my interest.

It doesn't feel as though she's had any sort of struggle in her life at all. I expected a fairly dark tone, but i don't think the author is good at writing a dark story.

 No.33406

>>33403
It is indeed a light novel. As for what it's about…I guess it's a war story? But really it's hard to describe.

>>33405
I can see where you're coming from, but it was enjoyable for me. I think the main thing is that she didn't have a struggle herself within the main story, she's more like an archetype than a character. She's more of a war hero as a class of figure than a person in and of herself. At the same time I wasn't really sure what was happening by the end, to be honest.

>>33403
Romcoms can be good if they're well-written, which is rare. Action comedy is worse for me because it usually means dumb slapstick.

What the fuck? Are these from the Oricon charts? In two years of publication this sold more than heavyweights like Hayate and Negima? Even motherfucking Love Hina? Half the shit on that list were absolutely massive in their heyday, to the point where you couldn't really be part of the English-language anime subculture without having heard of them. Am I just getting old and out of the loop or something?

Yeah 5toubun is fucking massive, it's incredible really because there doesn't seem to be an obvious reason it blew up so fast. I suppose the characters were honestly compelling and the plot wasn't repetitive which contributed to its success, there weren't many EH NANDATTE moments, the initial premise for them meeting isn't dragged on and on, and there's a sort of focus to the story that most other romcoms don't have.
It's honestly both weird and expected that it's ending after only 120ish chapters. Normally people milk their series that are THIS successful, but on the other hand I think part of the reason it IS so successful is because it wasn't milked so hard and there was obvious progression.

isn't this an F-35? And one old dude mentioned something about a war, so we can assume this is a war Japan fights in the future.

Also, remember that villages, insofar as they exist, are inherently self-sufficient, even today. Their entire socioeconomic structure is based on autarky, descended from a time when traders were infrequent and unreliable. Special goods they'd never be able to produce, but special goods they don't need. Look at the house the guy lives in, there's nothing there.

Well we haven't seen too much of the setting. It took like almost the entire series to get some semblance of understanding of what was really going on in YKK. If it's really some postwar reconstruction setting then it makes sense that there would still be a lot of old stuff around out in the sticks and Brian's probably some old American soldier who decided to stay around after the war or something. It's clearly an optimistic near-future setting in any case. The series only started serialization this year so I'm sure it'll get better fleshed out as we go on, even with the heavier focus on the characters.

Oh yeah but it very much looks like an F-35 or another single-engine 5th generation fighter of some sort. Japan's most iconic fighter jet is still an indigenous contract variant of the F-15 so the mangaka probably made a conscious decision to draw what he did.

It almost certainly depends on which thing it is, if we assume they're one and all the ghosts of dead people who've been left behind then it probably depends on what exactly they represent.
Like, remember, the tiny jew actively ran away from Mieruko and Mieruko chased it for some reason but it didn't try to hurt her. It could've been the ghost of a petty thief or miser, or it could've been some sort of fragment of a soul, or whatever. There was that one ghost who got exoricsed by perfume that apparently just wanted to grope fat tits and then there's this runner guy. All of them, assuming they're totally nonmalevolent, are probably just "normal" people's ghosts.
Then there was the axeman on the subway who was apparently ripping other ghosts out of people. There are ghosts which seem to be able to hurt you, or at least have the intent to hurt you, whether or not you can see them, like the oil barrel one under the bridge that almost killed Julia. Those might be the ghosts of murderers or of the brutally murdered, for example.

That's an interesting take. I'd also like to add that the little ones are part of the larger one and that the slasher doesn't seem bad and he probably noticed Mieruko, he's definitely going to feature again in the future. Started reading this and found out afterwards its getting an anime next season. Its pretty nice but 60 chapters in and I'm annoyed at the lack of development between Lanka and Jin. Every chapter is just introducing some new characters problems, the group getting together to solve them, then that character disappears and you just reset the situation each time. I thought Lanka going into heat would jump start their relationship forward but nothing came of that either, Jin's just completely taken on this annoying, shitty tsundere persona and hasn't even really been given the chance to confront his obvious feelings towards Lanka. I understand how he feels about wanting to continue the human lineage but when someone as cute as Lanka shows up in your life you basically have no choice.

Yasuda as a girl is so much more unique than Hayasaka, and given Hayasaka picks up all the slack while Yasuda lazes around the changed dynamic would be unfair for Hayasaka.

 No.34442

>Most manga is too smalltime to get translated for money.
Plenty of it gets translated for money and then printed and sold in physical form. Most serious readers of manga outside Japan (and a lot of them in Japan) read manga exclusively or in part on a screen.
Both fakku and CR hired people straight from fan-translation groups and purged their large volumes of reuploaded fanwork. Look where they are now. But yeah, it'd probably lead to a chilling effect with regards to the more niche manga, at least until the underground scanlating community rebounds, if it ever does. It's really all that's left of the old anime fan-labor community though so I don't have high hopes for that. And so much more manga is produced than manga that it's probably not feasible to get any significant proportion of it commercially translated the way CR does.
That said though, I don't know how likely it is for them to even be able to go legal considering the way the Japanese publishing industry operates and how manga reader sites are a dime a dozen.

I pretty much exclusively buy physical copies. It doesn't take any extra time, you can just order online, which is usually cheaper anyway. I never liked reading manga on a PC, I might get an e-reader soon but I doubt I'd actually buy much. I'd pirate digital and buy physical.

Mind, this wouldn't help for fan translations, but for Japan it might be nice.

>I pretty much exclusively buy physical copies

Yeah, well I mean if you're going to buy manga (or books) of course you want the physical, I just think the buffet version could work to sort of broaden availability. Not sure how many people will be interested, but I purchased the Dark Horse Omnibuses for the Elfen Lied manga.
I'm the guy who dumped all of Bando's story from in the Halloween before last, and since that character's had a big impact on my life, I wanted to compare the "official" translation to the fan translation that's existed for over a decade.

Since the Omnibuses have thick spines, and I don't want to rip them apart, I haven't scanned in the translated pages but instead have typed the translations out and will post the corresponding pages.

I've chosen four sentences/monologues that I felt had the biggest differences in translation.

>You a fucking idiot? You're the leader of those humans. Think about it. Who wants to die? If I were them, I'd start by just killing you. You suicidal? There's no way I'm gonna help this new race prosper! And I'm gonna kill that bitch as part of making sure it doesn't happen! I'm not gonna let you experiment on her or use her as some "Eve" for a new race. I'm gonna find her first. And seriously? You're a fuckin' scientist? I find the mention of killing people who track him to be interesting. The initial translation for that part was really vague, so I'm unsure if the initial translation didn't understand it or if it was added in as a filler statement in the Dark Horse version.

And I'm about the only dude on the planet that could wield this thing, with the massive kick it puts out. I had to steal it, but we'll keep that between us.

This was the sentence I was interested in seeing translated the most, as I could always tell the initial translation was off, given that a 50 cal isn't 9mm.
While the Dark Horse version seems to have gotten the ammunition section right, I'm not sure what to believe in regards to felt recoil, and the line about stealing the Desert Eagle, as that seems almost entirely tacked on for edge.

It answered one translation question and created another.

>Now that I think about all of it– my life has been full of nothing but enemies. As long as I can remember, I've resolved everything that rubbed me wrong with violence. And, I had no issue with that. Because I was strong. Unarmed or armed, nothing could take me down. I was unbeatable. That was my identity– that was me. The result was that, even if I was feared, I was never really respected. I've never loved another, nor been loved. After all, none of that was necessary. Everyone is my enemy. Anyone who isn't me. And it's not an overstatement to say that, if I were to die, there wouldn't be a single person shedding a single tear over me. Conversely, as I've felt pride and honor knowing I needn't rely on others and how they feel about me throughout my life. But then– why are you crying?

Last one, and although the translation isn't very different, I felt it important to include as it was the culmination of his character arc.
It also highlights the common differences in translation between the initial fan translation and the Dark Horse version; with Dark Horse improving grammar in some areas, while adding in excessive swearing.

I found it to be a quite interesting read. I wrote a similar comparison a few months ago involving the raw, the scanlation and the Dark Horse translation (and a little bit of the German translation) of the parts involving Nozomi in volume 5-6/omnibus 2, as Nozomi has been dear to me for over a decade now, and the translator tendencies in your comparison seem to be about the same as the ones I noticed.

I remember the scanlation being poor at parsing grammar and sometimes completely missing what sentences were getting at (The part where Kouta makes Nozomi upset by making a wisecrack about her not wearing panties got pretty jumbled, as did Nozomi talking about how her father treated her because of her issues), whereas the official translation spiced up the dialogue with uncalled for additions (Haha, "scared shitless". Very funny.) and sometimes mixed up who did what (Nozomi takes a punch from Yuka to protect Kouta, but the lines in the Dark Horse translation act as if Nozomi was the one who punched Yuka) as if the translator was just translating a script without looking at the actual pages.

I don't like mentioning other sites, I ask only because I was the OP who posted Bando and that would be an amusing coincidence, and it's amusing enough that a two year old thread popped into my mind from two sentences.

>whereas the official translation […] sometimes mixed up who did what […] as if the translator was just translating a script without looking at the actual pages.

Yeah! I noticed that too. I didn't write down any instances, but off the top of my head this page was one. Bando finishes the Unknown Man's question as a statement, but in the official translation it makes it seem like the Unknown Man screams the end of how own question.
Perhaps I could be wrong as I don't have the RAWs, but given the placement, and specifically the pronounced style of the word bubble, I think it's the former.

Speaking of RAWs, do you happen to have the RAWs for any of the pages I've posted/mentioned?
Also are you planning on trying Omnibus 3? Since I just flipped through to the parts with Bando I forget how much Nozomi is featured in those volumes.

Also in the end even if the official translation has it's as many flaws as it fixes from the scanlation, I'm still glad to own it physically in English finally.

Yup, that's me. Stumbled upon this thread while looking for what people were saying about the third omnibus.

Perhaps I could be wrong as I don't have the RAWs, but given the placement, and specifically the pronounced style of the word bubble, I think it's the former.

Yeah, it's definitely Bandou finishing the sentence. "nna mon tokku ni gishu da!!", which I'd translate to "That shit's been an artificial hand since long ago!". I have the raws for the entire series downloaded, so I could post the raws for the other Bandou pages too.

>Also are you planning on trying Omnibus 3? Since I just flipped through to the parts with Bando I forget how much Nozomi is featured in those volumes.

There's lots of Nozomi in omnibus 3, particularly the Nozomi special, but I only noticed about three major translation differences this time around.
Chapter 82 has them somehow translating Nozomi saying "Uh… no… I don't even know if I passed yet…" into someone else saying "Hey! I mean- I'm excited too but let's save the celebrating until we know you passed!".
In the Nozomi special, the part where Nozomi's father abuses her for the first time and she wets herself out of fear has him saying "Still wanna talk back to me?!" in the scanlation, but Dark Horse seems to interpret it as his reaction to her wetting herself and says "What, is this another way of you talking back now, huh?".
Finally, the part where he finds her exam slip has him saying "You are not to leave this house tomorrow!!" in the scanlation, but Dark Horse somehow translates it to "Pack your stuff and be out of this house by tomorrow.", which would be counterproductive to say the least since he's trying to prevent her from taking the exam.

Glad I asked, as that is an amusing coincidence.
Then again two people still focused on a ~15 year old series because two different side characters stuck with them all this time is a coincidence in and of itself.

I thought so! Especially given the jagged word bubble that usually indicates it's Bando who's yelling off-screen.
My sincerest thanks for posting the RAWs.

On a similar note, do you think the scanlation translation "Bandou" is correct, or the official "Bando"?
I've used "Bandou" the past decade, however since the Dark Horse release I've started interchanging them.

>There's lots of Nozomi in omnibus 3, particularly the Nozomi special

Glad to hear for you. I do recall seeing the Nozomi special at the end now that I think of it.

I'm probably going to opt out of Omnibus 4 as Bando only has four pages at the very end, and doesn't say enough to make the translation differences significant.

Mieruko-chan has some of the most legit demons I've seen around, manga or otherwise. It's probably at least a little because the rest of the artstyle looks extremely soft and non-threatening so it ends up almost a bit like the angel-demon-things from Helck.

They're clearly ghosts but then the question becomes whether they're the ghosts of actual physical entities that stayed behind in the sense of being fragments of souls, or if they're more like grudges, regrets, and chains to the past. The cats around Zen could be either but it feels to me almost like the ghost of his mother that hangs around him is less of a real physical entity and more like a representation of his own guilt and inability to move on from his childhood.

I still think that 5toubun is a manga that could've legitimately benefitted from say 30 more chapters, to flesh out 4's relationship and also maybe have a few chapters that revolved around 5. The weird tack-on where 5 realizes she likes him but then within a chapter says congrats doesn't sit well with me, not because I'm a 5fag but just because that sort of moving on feels like it should come BEFORE the confession instead of after
Springfield got burned out though near the end, his art was degrading and it felt pretty obvious he was rushing the last arc or two.

 No.35864

>>35863
I agree about those extra chapters but the extra development for both 4 and 5 should have come way waay earlier, even before they went to Kyoto again as there was no reason to focus on Miku yet again, but of course instead he went balls to the wall with the red herrings so people never guessed who was the winner and ended up killing their development. Such a pity as my favorite had always been 4 but there wasn't enough of her until the end and yeah Itsuki's realization that late was really bad.

5's big problem was that weird swing near the end
It would've been better if she was just part of the bowl in the first place, or if she never actually was interested period and offered congrats without even thinking she had any feelings.

I did like how much salt Nino showed compared to everyone else though, even 3 didn't have that much. I'm also extremely suspicious that 23 actually did bake the cake considering they run a bakery that the bride had to visit first

>there was no reason to focus on Miku yet again

I think Miku was fun and sexycute, but in some sense 4's victory makes sense because she never got 'focus', insofar as she was the only one who wasn't all over him and generally supported him in what he wanted instead of asking for support herself. That said I do feel like an arc where she either needed support or focused on helping him through personal problems that had nothing to do with the haremettes would've strengthened her claim. Yes, she's a background win, but at the same time she's so far in the background it feels like there was an entire section cut out the middle right near the end where you go from 'good friends' to 'please marry me'.

Maruo is kind of sweet even though he's an edgy faggot who reminds me of Azami from SnS
I find it unspeakably weird that they could stay together after being separated for five years in university

Yeah pretty much, I had already made peace with Itsuki not being a part of the bowl and actually considered her a "best bro" all the way until the end which is why I don't really like her suddenly realizing she does like him, at the end no less. There was no need to sully her character at that point.
The time separated isn't important, so long as you believe in love and you might not be wrong about the cake and who baked it.
