and here's an aesthetic picture I took of my eva tapes
What are you going to do about tape rot?
I've considered getting into anime laserdiscs since I have a player sitting in a closet somewhere and I really like the LP form factor. Haven't gotten around to anything though.
doesn't happen as a rule. As long as I keep them dry, rewound, vertical, and at a reasonable room temperature, they'll last fine, and even if they don't, it won't matter, I'll have them all converted to video files eventually
I knew a guy who collected VHS. He had a whole room full of them at one point but after he got married his wife made him get rid of most of them. He still has a whole bookshelf of them though in his study. The DBZ set where all the boxes in order make that picture is pretty cool.
I'd like to but I'm a penniless NEET.
Woah that is really cool, color me jealous.
I don't really collect any anime video media sadly, the most I have is a single blu-ray. It's the kind of thing that I would consider getting into if I had the money though. I have to imagine that sort of thing ain't cheap given the rarity of the items and the extreme niche appeal.
I have all of Tricot's albums on vinyl which is sorta kinda close because it's an obsolete medium, but those are very recent albums so yeah. Not quite the same.
I've been seeing a lot of DBZ sets up on ebay recently, people ask a lot of money when the tapes cases make a picture
some ppl charge far too much, but every once in a while you'll find a lot with some high quality tapes for a reasonable price. The hard part is getting the eng sub releases so you can avoid the shitty early dubs
rock the dragon
Sounds like a fun hobby to hunt for things. If you find any cool tapes make sure you show them off!

a closeup of the Angel boot
you say most of them are english subbed, but I lot a whole bunch of really old (90's and earlier) stuff here
are these like… fan subs or something?
nah, I mean, besides the angel's egg boot. Most of it is U.S. Manga Corps/Manga/Software Sculpters and some others I can't think of rn. Bout all of em far as I can tell are official releases
There have always been plenty of official subs. Not everything was meant for TV broadcast in every country and some stuff had only partially-finished dubs or was aired in Japanese with subtitles from the start.
Also, a lot of stuff tended to be treated better outside the US. There are a lot of really high-quality releases from Italy.
I almost bought a Shoujo Tsubaki tape from the guy who made that Angel's Egg.
Are you getting most of your tapes online, or do you have a cool local thrift store?
On eBay you can sometimes find lots of old anime VHS tapes going for relatively cheap or as auctions. I haven't bought any myself since I don't have a working VCR of my own. I've mostly come across the lots as auctions while looking for figures.
If anyone's interested, Kenny Lauderdale on YouTube goes over some of the stuff he finds and he's picked out some of the more obscure and lost-media-ish stuff to make videos on.
